On a mission to bring affordable nonprofit training to local organizations
A key priority in our current strategic plan at La Crosse Community Foundation is to invest in the strength and sustainability of our local nonprofits beyond our grantmaking. Over the last couple of years, we’ve accomplished this by offering professional development opportunities like partnering nonprofit leaders with fundraising coaches and hosting free workshops with guest speakers on a variety of topics.
We’re excited to announce that these efforts have led to a bigger conversation with Viterbo University’s Center for Professional Learning and Development. You may recall when they hosted the Nonprofit Leadership Development certification program several years ago. Many nonprofit staff and board members across the community completed the course and found tremendous value from its content.
Announcing the launch of the Nonprofit Leadership Development Collaborative
We are currently in the planning stages of working with Viterbo to bring back a version of this program at a time when we can safely meet together in person for, at the least, a blended schedule of virtual and in-person classes. In the meantime, we’re launching the new Nonprofit Leadership Development Collaborative with a three-session, virtual nonprofit finance series for board members called “Introduction to Nonprofit Financial Oversight: A Training for Board Members.”
We believe this is a very timely topic as board members are being challenged exponentially this year to help the nonprofit organizations they serve remain financially viable during this unprecedented time. Ultimately, our hope is that board members who participate in this session will feel more equipped and comfortable to have financial conversations at board meetings that will help their organizations remain strong and effective during the pandemic.
Three sessions on financial oversight that board members won’t want to miss
Our finance director, Erin Belby, will facilitate the three-session course. She brings over 15 years of experience in auditing, accounting and consulting, including 10 years focused on audits of La Crosse area nonprofits.
The three-session course will cover the following topics: fiduciary duties of nonprofit boards, basic nonprofit financial literacy, and financial reporting & monitoring for financial health.

We are holding space for 25 nonprofit board members. This topic is one of the most frequently requested topics by nonprofit leaders, and we anticipate the class will fill quickly. Scholarships are available by request.
